Hon. Dr. Swarnim Wagle is a distinguished Nepali economist and politician, currently serving as the Minister of Finance and a Member of the Federal Parliament of Nepal since 2023. He brings extensive experience in global economic policy, development economics, and public service.
Prior to his current role, Hon. Dr. Wagle served as Chief Economic Advisor at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific in New York (2020–2022), where he provided strategic policy guidance across 36 countries. He also co-edited The Great Upheaval, published by Cambridge University Press, and led high-level policy advisory missions to crisis-affected countries, including Sri Lanka.
Over the course of his career between 1997 and 2022, he has worked as an economic policy specialist with leading international organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank.
He has also served as Chair of the Institute for Integrated Development Studies (IIDS), a prominent South Asian policy think tank based in Kathmandu, established in 1979.
Hon. Dr. Wagle holds a PhD in Economics from the Australian National University, a Master’s degree in International Development from Harvard University, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics.
